Hi, I’m Griffin.

I’ve been building digital products for nearly three decades, mostly with start-ups or innovation teams working with emerging technologies.

I’ve been a writer, designer, editor, creative director, program manager, product leader, and founder.

Now I draw on all those experiences and more to offer part-time, full-stack product strategy, management and user experience services for start-ups and other interesting endeavours.

How can I help?

I help early-stage companies and innovation teams take their ideas from concept to successful launch. As a Fractional Product Leader, I can lean in as much (or as little) as needed to hone your ideas, get your team off on the right foot, take your product to market, or anywhere in between.

Here are some common problems with “zero-to-one” projects and how I can help. If any of these sound familiar, please reach out and let’s talk.

  • All great businesses start off with an idea, but let’s be honest … not all ideas start off great. Founders, entrepreneurs, and other visionaries need a thought partner who can help them take that original nugget of inspiration and hone it into the great idea that it’s meant to be. I’ll challenge your assumptions, help you test your hypothesis, develop the “eye candy” that captures your vision, find your audience and learn from them, and ultimately gain the confidence in your idea to take it to the next step … building it.

  • There’s something both exhilarating and intimidating about a limitless blue sky — which direction should you go? When the field is completely green or the slate totally blank, where do you even begin? Maybe you have an affinity for a certain user base and you want to build something that serves them. Maybe you know a given industry inside and out and want to bring something new to that market. But what? I can help you figure that out. When the sky’s the limit, you need a good flight plan. Through foundational user research, market analysis, reviews of relevant academic studies or media reports … whatever it takes. Together we’ll develop a deep understanding of the market you want to serve and the problems they face. Then we can build a solution that people will care about.

  • It’s exciting to have more ideas than you know what to do with, but that excitement can easily lead to spinning around in circles and not getting anything done. That’s where strategic roadmapping comes in. I help you sort through your ideas, figure out what criteria to use when assessing them, do the research and other legwork to validate and prioritize your ideas with data, and ultimately establish a clear and focused roadmap of what to build and in what order. Together, we’ll transform your rough ideas into a clear vision and a detailed and robust plan to bring it to reality.

  • It’s awesome to have a clarity of vision, a mission, a North Star to set sail towards. But how you go about getting there is (almost) as important as the destination itself. Having the right tooling and processes in place from the get-go is essential to the smooth operation and ultimate success of your endeavor. But there is no one-size-fits-all process when it comes to building something from scratch. The nature of what you’re building, the style and make-up of your team, and the ambitiousness off your timeline all influence the design of your product development operations. Too little organization and things quickly go off the rails. Too much and your efforts are hindered by unnecessary overhead. I can help you find the product-process fit that will optimize your team’s productivity and maximize the success of your efforts.

  • Adapting an existing solution to fill a somewhat different need is a great way to grow your business without the time or expense of building something from scratch. But this may require thinking about your product in a different way than you’re accustomed to. Bringing in a fresh set of eyes can help you break out of any established biases or preconceived notions and unlock the larger potential of your current offering. Together, we can find those opportunities and put together an actionable plan to bring your product to a larger audience.

  • With competing priorities, it’s easy to lose focus on what drives real value. I’ll help you create a prioritization framework tailored to your goals, so you make confident decisions about what should be on the roadmap and what can wait. A roadmap should bring clarity, not chaos. I’ll work with you to establish a strategic plan that’s flexible but focused, anticipating ambiguity and decision points ahead of time. This way, your team has a reliable direction that accommodates uncertainty without losing sight of the big picture.

  • As workloads increase, it’s easy for teams to burn out or lose focus. As a fractional member of your product team, I offer flexible support when you need it, stepping in to fill gaps and provide relief so your team can focus on their core strengths and pressing priorities.

What I’ve done …

Since 1995, I’ve worked full-time for 10 start-ups and two household names and done project work for countless others. I’ve been a founder, employee #1 (thrice), employee #432,917, and a few in between. I’ve done consulting work at various points in my career and have been doing so full-time since 2023.

My experience includes D2C offerings in entertainment, editorial, education, and cybersecurity as well as B2B solutions in ad tech, ed tech, fin tech, and logistics. In addition to typical web and mobile apps, I’ve developed products for TV-connected devices and IOT hardware, voice-controlled experiences, and AI/ML-powered applications.

My career started in the San Francisco Bay Area during the first Dotcom era, but most of my time has been with Boston or New York City-based start-ups. I worked remotely extensively before the pandemic and have done so exclusively since 2020, collaborating with teams spread all over North America, Europe, and India. I now work out of my home in beautiful Nova Scotia, Canada.
